Santorini, the scenic tourist island in Greece, is under a State of Emergency of the island has over 7700 tremors in less than a week. The order will stay in effect on the island until March 3, 2025.
Just days after the tremors started, seismologists recorded an earthquake of 5.2 prompting Greek civil protection authorities to declare a state of emergency. There is a growing concerns and fear of a natural disaster due to the constant seismic activity that is shaking the Santorini island.
Over 12,000 residents have voluntarily left the island since the tremors started. Experts are predicting the seismic activity to last for weeks prompting tourist to avoid the island. As of February 6, 2025, Santorini’s town with blue topped buildings resembles a ghost town prompting fears and concerns among locals about long term tourism impact. The current concern that has experts divided is whether or not the 5.2 earthquake that took place on Wednesday Feb 5, 2025 could be a precursor to a larger earthquake or if the 5.2 earthquake could be a sign that the tremors will slow down. So far, experts are unable to determine either likely scenario.
For the time being, it is probably best to consider other travel plans.
