President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports.
The executive order, signed Feb 5, 2025, bans transgender athletes from women’s sports. The Trump administration claims that the executive order will finally end the war on women’s sports and is necessary for the safety of women athletes. At the signing event, Trump proudly stated, “We will defend the proud tradition of female athletes, and we will now allow men to beat up, injure and cheat our women and our girls.”
“Keeping Men out of Women’s Sports,” as the executive order is titled, gives federal agencies the right to withhold funding from any entity receiving federal funding that do not follow the Trump administration Title IX interpretation that “sex” refers to the gender someone was assigned to at birth. The order allows for the withholding of federal funds for any schools that permit transgender athletes to compete on any women’s sports team. “If you let me take over women’s sports teams or invade your locker rooms, you will be investigated and risk your federal funding,” stated Trump.
In addition to this executive order, Trump has said he will urge the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to change their rules for the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been directed to let the IOC know that the Trump administration wants them to change their rules regarding “this absolutely ridiculous subject.”
Since retaking office, the Trump administration has made a series of executive orders aimed at rolling back transgender rights including banning transgender troops from the military, restricting gender transition procedures before the age of 19, and implementing the policy that the United Stated government will only recognize two genders, male or female.
